The garlic decoction involves boiling crushed cloves for about twenty minutes. The heat quickly extracts the active compounds, but some of the thermosensitive allicin degrades. The resulting liquid should be used in the following days: it does not keep for long.

The garlic macerate, on the other hand, relies on a cold fermentation that lasts several days. The crushed cloves macerate in water (ideally rainwater) until the mixture stops producing bubbles on the surface. This fermentation process further stabilizes the active ingredients and results in a more persistent preparation once sprayed on the foliage.

According to available data on sustainable agriculture, fermented formulations offer better consistency in antifungal effect compared to simply boiled preparations. For regular use in the vegetable garden, fermented macerate is therefore preferred. The decoction remains useful for quick intervention when an aphid or spider mite infestation does not allow time for fermentation.

To prepare a natural garlic macerate properly, a few manufacturing parameters must be respected, which directly condition the effectiveness of the finished product.

The reference proportion for plant macerates in general is about one kilogram of fresh material for ten liters of water. With garlic, we work with more modest quantities because the concentration of active ingredients is high.

Preparation steps

  • Peel and coarsely crush the garlic cloves to release the allicin. A pestle or the flat of a knife is sufficient; the goal is to break the cells without turning them into a fine puree.
  • Place the crushed cloves in a non-metallic container (plastic bucket, earthenware pot) and cover with rainwater or spring water. Chlorinated tap water can hinder fermentation.
  • Cover the container with an air-permeable cloth, not an airtight lid: fermentation produces gases that must escape.
  • Stir the mixture once a day. The fermentation is complete when the bubbles stop appearing on the surface, which usually takes between one and two weeks depending on the ambient temperature.
  • Filter the liquid through a cloth or fine sieve before storing it in an opaque container.

Storage and stability

A properly filtered garlic macerate can be stored for a few weeks in a cool, dark place. The smell remains strong, which is normal. If the liquid develops a distinct putrid odor (different from the characteristic sulfur smell), the preparation has spoiled and loses effectiveness.

Adding a small amount of oil maceration of garlic (crushed cloves that have macerated in vegetable oil) at the time of spraying enhances the product’s adherence to the leaves and prolongs the repellent effect.

Garlic macerate does not act the same way on all garden problems. It is better to know its strengths to avoid misuse.

Regarding diseases, the antifungal action works mainly preventively. Sprayed regularly on the foliage before symptoms appear, garlic macerate limits the development of downy mildew, powdery mildew, rust, moniliosis in the orchard, and peach leaf curl. Once the disease is established, effectiveness decreases significantly.

On the pest side, sulfur compounds repel aphids, spider mites, and whiteflies (common in greenhouses). Garlic also acts against certain soil nematodes, which is less known.

However, garlic macerate has no notable effect on slugs, Colorado potato beetles, or cabbage worms. For these pests, other natural preparations (fern macerate, horsetail decoction) take over.

Spraying in the vegetable garden: frequency and mistakes to avoid

Garlic macerate is used diluted before spraying. The dilution varies depending on the use: for preventive foliar treatment, one volume of macerate to ten volumes of water is a common base. For soil watering against nematodes, the concentration can be slightly higher.

Spray early in the morning or late in the day, never in direct sunlight. Droplets on leaves exposed to direct sunlight can cause burns, and allicin degrades faster under ultraviolet light.

The frequency depends on pest pressure. In humid periods, conducive to downy mildew on tomatoes or potatoes, a treatment every ten to fifteen days is reasonable. In dry weather without visible attack, a treatment every three weeks is sufficient.

Two common mistakes are:

  • Using the pure macerate without dilution, which can burn the foliage of sensitive plants like young lettuce or strawberry plants.
  • Spraying just before rain, which cancels the treatment by washing the product off the leaves.

Garlic macerate does not replace crop rotation or a living soil. It is part of a set of practices: plant associations, mulching, compost application. Used alone on impoverished soil, its effect remains limited. Coupled with other macerates (nettle for fertilization, horsetail to strengthen plant defenses), it forms a coherent arsenal for a vegetable garden without synthetic products.
